In this session, we have
explored a range of online resources including online dictionaries, thesaurus,
pronunciation dictionaries, a corpus as well as websites for comparing sentences.
In which two of them sound particularly useful to my work with my primary 6
students.
The first useful resource is the thesaurus. One of the problems in my students' compositions is
lack of vocabulary, especially adjectives. They always use 'good', 'nice' and
'happy' all the time and they just don't know what other words they can use.
With the help of a thesaurus, my students can easily replace those
'commonly-used' words to improve their writing. Also, they can develop the
habit of solving problems on their own (checking answers by themselves online) in
order to become a self-directed learner, which is important for them when they
get into secondary schools a few months later.
The second useful resource
would be the pronunciation dictionaries. Sometimes when my students are
revising on their dictations or reading a new passage, they may not know how to pronounce certain words.
In this case, they can simply check on the pronunciation dictionaries and
listen to the words as many times as they want to.
